Coffee

** If you have any questions on Sunday feel free to ask Coffee team lead, Tom Berna (412-512-0141), or our volunteer coordinator, Karl Thomas (412-628-5218). **

THE JOB: Make coffee before service

WHEN: The sooner, the better! Coffee takes about 30 minutes to percolate. Ideally, you would start at 9:45am. The more coffee we need for a Sunday, the longer it takes. Once you start brewing and have supplies set out, you are done!

HOW: Complete the following tasks before people arrive. Please try and begin brewing the coffee no later than 9:45am:

  • GET SUPPLIES: The coffee urn is under the counter in the cafeteria. The items needed for making/serving coffee are in a tote marked “Coffee Supplies” on a shelf behind the stage.

  • FILL URN WITH WATER: We have access to a utility sink in the Laundry Closet. To find this sink from the cafeteria, walk toward the kitchen and turn right down the hallway. The laundry closet is the second closet on the left--it's not too far. Please do NOT use the kitchen. Fill the urn with cold water using a carafe. Check the glass sight tube in the front of the urn and fill to the 6/10 line (60 cups). We need to monitor this amount since we sometimes run out.

  • ADD COFFEE: Pour 1 ½ (one and one half) 12 oz ground coffee bags into the top. Spread coffee evenly.

  • TURN ON MACHINE: Plug in and turn on (it takes some time to get going).

  • SET OUT SUPPLIES: milk, sweeteners, cups, lids, etc. Please mark the date you open any non-dairy creamers/almond milk as they can spoil at 10-14 days.

  • THAT’S IT! Thank you for your help!

** NOTE: Tom Berna (412-512-0141) is in charge of getting supplies. Please text him if there isn’t enough coffee/milk/cream/sweetener/cups for the current week & the next week. **
