Small Group--Just Mercy Book Club

  • Crazy Mocha 5607 Baum Boulevard Pittsburgh, PA United States (map)

During the summer of 2018 John Creasy used his Continuing Ed money to visit the Equal Justice Initiatives Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The Legacy Museum and the Memorial help Americans realize the link between today’s mass incarceration of African Americans, slavery, Jim Crow and segregation and our history of terror through lynching. The book, written by Bryan Stevenson, will help us understand these connections and ways that we can all work to end racial injustice. Bryan is a lawyer, social justice activist, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. Stevenson has challenged bias against the poor and minorities in the criminal justice system, especially children. He helped achieve United States Supreme Court decisions that prohibit sentencing children under 18 to death or to life imprisonment without parole. Stevenson advocates for people of color and poor within the criminal justice system and has gotten around 100 prisoners off death row through his career.
