Tree Pittsburgh

01.24.2012

Tree Pittsburgh would love to hear from 1,000 City of Pittsburgh residents by the end of January! Please complete their online survey.

Tree Pittsburgh is leading an effort to create Pittsburgh’s very-first Urban Forest Master Plan. It describes a shared vision for the future of the urban forest to inspire and engage residents, business owners, and organizations in the care and protection of trees.

One of the most important components of an Urban Forest Master plan is public involvement and input. We need to hear from as many people as possible [including you and your friends and neighbors and relatives and coworkers] to protect and maintain our trees for generations to come.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PITTSBURGH’S TREES?

Be a part of the plan - tell us what you like and what you don’t like about trees in this short survey and enter to win a gift cards from Giant Eagle.

P.S. Please feel free to forward this email and survey far and wide!

Worship is Moving to 10:10am on February 5, 2012

01.24.2012

Over the past 3 months the Worship Design Team and the Elders have been praying, listening, discussing and discerning moving our worship to the mornings.  We are excited to announce that on Sunday, February 5th our weekly worship gathering will be moving to 10:10am.  If you have questions about anything related to this decision please feel free to talk to Bj Woodworth, John Creasy and/or our elders. We have also heard from a number of people that it would be helpful to see a list as to some of reasons for this move so here are some of the thoughts the worship design team and the elders have had along the way.  These are not in any particular order.
  • Worship attendance could become more consistent and increase. We observed that in 2009 when we moved worship to the morning for the summer, the average attendance was 94 people per week and in 2010 and 2011 summer worship averaged 74.  It will no longer conflict with Steeler’s games and there are generally less social activities on Sunday mornings to compete with people coming to and participating in worship.
  • Morning worship is generally easier on families with young children and we can serve them by doing this.
  • This will give us an opportunity to “reinvent/relaunch” ourselves to the neighborhood.  We can get the word out through a variety of communications sources to announce this worship time shift and invite more people to worship and be more integrated into the community, which is our current goal.
  • Creates more opportunity for people to eat together after worship, especially families who currently cannot do that since they need to get kids fed and to bed as soon as worship is over.  Again this is not just a kid and family reality it is also a growing reality for many working adults who at 6:30 need to head home to prepare for work the next day.
  • Worship design team discussed future possibilities as the church grows of offering a Sunday evening vespers service and or some kind of small group that could meet during that time frame.
  • The Union project is strongly in favor of us moving our worship time so they can rent the space to other groups on Sunday nights.  They say they have multiple requests for that space each month.

Financial Update

11.17.2011

The goals for 2011 marks our most aggressive year for tithes and offerings since our inception as a church in 2005 and God has been faithful through your generous giving so keep up the good work. Our goal for tithes and offerings this year is $167,110 or $3,213 each week. Our weekly average through December 04 is $2,853.66, which if we maintained would come in $18,719.72 short of our goal. You may remember that around this time in 2010 we were also facing a shortfall, but we were blessed abundantly with some one-time gifts. This year, we all need to continue to be generous and give with open hands to the mission of God in and through our church. Remember that you can give on line on our web site, through Pay Pal or Razoo and can also sign up to have your tithe or offering automatically withdrawn from your bank account. If you desire auto withdrawal please contact Joy Hickey (joy@pghopendoor.org) for a form or grab one from the info table at worship. Thanks for your ongoing partnership in the Gospel!
